Visit the world’s first salt mine opened to visitors since over 400 years and enjoy a fun slide to discover the “White Gold”. Treat yourself to a visit of the medieval-baroque city of Hallein. Only a few kilometers away from Salzburg, you will find a charming old town with a lot of history. The unique salt mine nearby will be the highlight and worthwhile because of the beautiful view into the valley and the long interesting mining history.

The journey from Salzburg to Hallein takes about 30 minutes and offers a wide view of the Tennengebirge, the Untersberg mountain and even the Bavarian Alps. After a short drive up a mountain you will reach the salt mine. Get ready for the tour by putting on protective clothes over your own clothes, take a fun picture of yourself and of the stunning view into the valley. In the next 60 minutes the guide will take you by train into the salt cave, you will walk through the caves and even use 2 long slides to see more of the salt in the mountain.

Listen to the history which started here around 2600 years ago – when Celts settled at the Dürrnberg, exploiting the rich salt deposits for their own benefit: “white gold” provided the foundation for their existence, securing them many years of work and prosperity. The prince-archbishops of Salzburg used this “White Gold” and used it to build the magnificent baroque architecture we encounter in Salzburg City to this very day. If time allows deepening your knowledge about the Celts. There is an interesting little Celtic village right next to the mine. Wooden huts, fireplaces, craftsmen's houses and a princely Celtic grave are only some of the areas to be visited.

After the salt mine visit, enjoy a drive and stop through the historic town of Hallein. Take a look at the medieval center with narrow streets, colorful houses, authentic cafes, find small local stores and even a local farmers market on some days of the week. A stop in front of the Celtic Museum opens a view along the Salzach river to the Barnstone mountain and into another area of the old town.

Afterwards, it is time to drive back to Salzburg. Your guide will finish the tour at your Hotel. Hopefully, this excursion made you even more curious to explore Salzburg some more.
